East London Community Band's (ELCB) Virtual Concert 11th 2020. Welcome to our virtual concert broadcast through a Facebook live stream that took place on SATURDAY 11 JULY 2020, at 6.00PM. https://justgiving.com/campaign/elcb This east London music-making charity, which would normally meet every Friday evening at the Shadwell Centre, took its activities online in March just before the official lockdown. The music directors developed a virtual programme for members to learn, share and rehearse – making the most of online platforms. The band developed original pieces that responded to the pandemic and also focused on what the band meant to its members during COVID-19. Several band members are frontline NHS workers, which informed the band-wide new piece, to be premiered at the concert this weekend. The varied programme of both reflection and celebration featured pre-recorded video pieces from our ensembles (jazz, early music and chamber band) and some live solos. Other items include original compositions such as James Brady’s Quarantine Samba and a percussion piece developed by Isis Dunthorne with our (mainly) junior members using household objects. Suzanne Gorman, Chair of East London Community Band said: “The point of being in a band is to make music together. Lockdown meant we risked losing touch with each other or feeling alienated by the virtual space we were forced into. Thankfully our musical team led by Matthew Hardy, came up with a programme online that inspired our members to keep going – the social side has been almost as important as making the music. The future for funding is uncertain but the resilience of this group has shown that we will be around for a few years yet – especially as we plan our 50th anniversary events in 2024.” ELCB www.eastlondoncommunityband.co.uk @ELCB_Social #togetherinmusic #communityband
