@daviddyer26077 years ago For me the biggest mistake when using a journal is forgetting that it is a tool to make your life easier, the aesthetics are of secondary importance. 2053

@mrbqkc7 years ago After watching so many perfect bullet journal layouts it's so nice to watch yours! I know that might sound insulting, your bullet journal is very nice, but it's realistic, ya know? Like now I'm thinking I can do it too, instead of just watching professional calligraphers 😂 ... 1205

@AlexisDeona7 years ago I usually use the blank pages from older bullet journals and save them for when I make mistakes in my current bullet journal. Then I'll cut a piece of the blank page and use it kind of like white out - pasting it over my mistakes so I can try again. ... 352

    @SharieFernandez5 years ago 1) layout
    -don't start halfway
-caused her to jump around the bullet journal
    2)The wrong pens
    -ones that don't leak through
    3)weekly spread layout
    4)making blank pages
    5)monthly views layout
    6)To Read List layout
    7) Setting Goals
    -don't underestimate them
I used this as kind of a notepad for later reference. Hope this helps everyone!!

@camilapais29046 years ago Respectfully, and with much love, I think the only mistake you're making is taking your BuJo too seriously 😊 The idea behind the method is to use it as a way to let go of unnecessary things, and I feel you're holding a grudge with yourself for not being perfect. Enjoy the wonderful creation you've made (because it truly looks beautiful!) and pay no attention to the small inconveniences you may have encountered. Make it as artsy as you like of course, I just think it's nice to cherish both the things we're proud of as the things we learnt from. Lots of love 💜 ... 654

@Marialla.6 years ago I agree with grouping collections at the back of the book. My suggestion is to flip the book over so that as you add your collections they still read left to right instead of having to go backwards right to left. I sometimes find my collections run on for several pages, and this is a way to help that make sense. ... 42

@lazydaisyfelines7 years ago I don't do calligraphy, but I use Pilot Frixion Color Sticks in a Leuchtturm, and they don't bleed, and really don't shadow much, but the best thing about them is that they are erasable. Everyone who sees my journal thinks I never make mistakes, but I just erase a lot. I order the Frixion pens on Amazon, though I've seen them in a few stores. I use black or navy for most of my text, but I really like using the light grey for lines. ... 98

@laineygann77135 years ago I just started my first bu-jo (7 January) with no stickers or artwork.. My plan was to have simple pages for appointments, a medical log, home cleaning routines, and a reading list. Very basic! Already I have made some mistakes you mention. I wanted it to be perfect, but it won't be and that's ok!..It still serves it's intended purpose--to help keep my life in order. I loved watching this, so I subscribed. x ... 6

@whisperingthymes32005 years ago Through college I used my sketch book for everything. Bullet journaling wasn't a thing yet, but it would have helped me find things if I had indexed them. Now I am starting bullet journaling, and I realized that it is the same principle I used back then, but with tagging to link everything together and an Index to reference back to what you have already done. Don't be hard on yourself. It will disappoint you every time if you over think, and over plan it. Just let it come to you each day as something new. Don't try to leave spaces for things....except maybe the Index...just let each day flow forward as a new start. Let your collections happen where they first occur. That is why you have the Index. It isn't about perfection, it's about your personal process, and alowing yourself to make mistakes. That is the true sign of growth. ... 6

@bsimpson6395 years ago I know this video is a couple of years old, but I want to thank you for sharing your “mistakes”. I’m new to this, and it’s immensely satisfying, but I’m like you: not particularly comfortable with “mistakes” and I’m glad you highlight the pitfalls. Yes, it’s all “ok” and it should be useful and fun, but I personally tend to get pissed when I put a lot of love and time into something then flub it, lol.
I also want to comment on the Collections, and leaving space.
At first I thought I would do the same, because it seemed so disjointed to have them everywhere, and indexed. BUT, now I see the reason for indexing; it’s nearly impossible to “leave space” and count it out. The index works!

@billyblack37125 years ago For testing pens, it helps writing the Name of the Pen for later reference to which pen-type worked and which bled through the page. Otherwise, you'll have a bunch of "hellos" and no clue as to which pen was the "ghosting" culprit. ... 3

@olivianeukam56362 years ago Just started my second bullet journal, and I can probably come up with my own list...
    1) index and page numbering, waste of time when you don't use many collections.
    2) tracking things that don't need tracking... Used my last journal mostly in middle school (I'm a sophomore now, I took a break) and I loved my assignment trackers but barely used my daily logs because I didn't need them at the time.
    3) Drawing out a whole calendar for each month. I prefer two bars of dates with a line beside each date to write events. Saves time and space without losing functionality.
    4) Mood trackers without journaling. To me it's pointless to track my mood if I can't figure out why I felt that way.
    5) Using colors I don't like just so every month has a unique theme.
And lastly, to any new bujoers... Save yourself money, skip the leuchttrum and get a Poluma, Lemome, or Emshoi.

@bratturtle86315 years ago Thanks for doing this video! I'm about to start my first "real" journal, after practicing in a notebook for the last couple months. I'm a little nervous and intimidated! I picked a Bob Ross journal, to remind myself to not worry about perfection. But I see so many perfect journals, that it's a relief to see this! Yours still looks so great, mistakes and all. That'll help me be more forgiving with myself! ... 5

@emilysunnysidesire34936 years ago im soo very glad I found this video bc I’m starting my first bullet journal and it is very helpful. It’s nice to see something more realistic as well. Not to say other videos aren’t realistic it’s just when other videos show/say a mistake, their mistakes still seem so perfect. And I’m not sure how beginners are going to learn from that bc they are going to strive for perfection, it’s not going to work out, they are going to most likely going to get discouraged and give up. (At least that’s what I’d do🤷‍♀️😂)
    Thank you! 😊

@AdorkableArtist924 years ago i really appreciate this video! I tried bullet journaling a few times over the last few years, and it was only this year that I figured out why it wasn't working for me. The journal i bought was garbage quality. The pages are practically tissue-paper thin! NO WONDER none of my supplies made "pretty" pages. No wonder I was tearing holes every time I erased. Plus I just didn't have the patience back then to set up with rulers and counting dots and yadda yadda. I just wanted pretty, instagram-worthy pages without being willing to sit down and learn the basics first. I'm older, wiser, and more motivated now, with a new bullet journal and some stickers from Plant Based Bride in the mail to help do this right this time. I have been watching SOOOO many videos to help as well. ... 1

@heathensaplenty41845 years ago A lifesaver for your charts: logarithmic scaling. First ten are by tens, second ten are by hundreds, third by thousands, etc. With my 8x6 I could chart up to 100k subs if I started at each dot being ten. If I need more, then I grab another color pen and start charting at the same scale, but the first 10 are now 100k, and the chart goes up to a billion, and if you get more than a billion followers, yet still don't think that merits another page, then grab another color and the first ten now mean a billion. If you go higher than the tenth or eleventh square (i.e., 10 - 20 billion) with the third color, then you may want to entertain the possibility that some of those followers might be bots. ... 1

@cailleana98337 years ago hey there Jade. Thx for sharing your 'mistakes' with us. makes the bujo-newbies (like myself ;) ) a little less frustrated with the own 'mistakes'. but with your youtube-tracker: you left so much space between the expected followers.. maybe you could use a different colour and track the higher numbers between the lower ones? ... 30

@EnchantedwithPoodles7 years ago Thank you for sharing your “mistakes!” I am just starting out with bullet journaling so this information is invaluable to me. I think your journal is fantastic and that you are too hard on yourself but I can understand the frustration in discovering that you wish you had done some things differently. It sounds like you have learned so much in just 9 months and I think you should be proud of yourself. I hope my fist journal will be half as successful as yours is. Again, thank you for sharing your journey. ... 1

@carriekoltunov32885 years ago I use a weekly spread almost the same as yours, but I only drew out the boxes once. I use a discbound journal, so I just made a template and made a bunch of photocopies. Then all I do is fill in the dates, add some washi tape and a little color, and start planning! I'm much better about keeping up with it that way. ...
  • @
@amyzm76775 years ago One way I bullet journal differently than I usually see others do: my index is an INDEX, listed in alphabetical order (not a table of contents, listed in page order). I leave a couple of pages at the front, give room for the whole alphabet, and then add items to the index as I add them to the book. I don't have to worry about keeping daily pages together, or making enough room for a collection, or any of that, because I will always be able to find them by looking in the index. A table of contents doesn't add much, because the items are already IN page order and you can flip through to find them--but an index makes it far, far more usable. It's what allows me to put in whatever I think of--sermon ideas, gift lists, daily schedules, books to read--instead of having different notebooks for each. ...

@heddahovden65254 years ago I'm actually really happy to see that I'm not the only one who sucks at "bed by 11" 😂 1

@Foervraengd7 years ago A good fountain pen for daily writing is LAMY Safari or Pilot Metropolitan, pens with a fine (F) nib will put down less amounts of ink than a broad. Also the ink can matter as well, most standard inks work fine tho. The pelican 4001 series are good standard inks but aren't waterproof. The "ghosting" which I saw someone explain in a comment further down, is something some people like because it can add a sense that you're really using the pages, so it's a matter of personal taste. Bleedthrough however - that sucks big time ugh. I wished the leuchtturm could handle markers because that'd made decorating the pages so much fun. ... 14

@antoinebugleboy4 years ago It helps to turn the book upside-down when you're writing from the back page toward the front. It keeps the binding on the left.
I keep separate notebooks if I know there's something that I'm going to be writing a lot about, and want to look up in the future. ...

@CookingForAll7 years ago Thank you for this! I just bought my first bullet journal online last night and while I'm excited to start it, it seems a little daunting at the same time.
After starting my channel, I'm finding that time has gotten away from me. Between a full time job and life in general, and now with my YouTube channel and the social media that goes along with it, I often find myself spending more time trying to figure out how to get everything done instead of just doing all of it because my brain is in such a jumble. I'm hoping the intense organization of a bullet journal will help, because at this point my channel is the most important thing to me and I want to put as much time into it as I can.
So thanks for posting these tips! I feel like these are the sorts of mistakes I would make, especially splitting the journal in half, so it's nice to half them brought to my attention before I start.

@opal7775 years ago In my day, we didn't call it a bullet journal....it was a day planner. It became overwhelming after a while. I had to make a schedule on the computer at work and then would write it all in my day planner. I finally started printing out my online schedule on a smaller scale and putting it into the book. Back then, we had D ring binders for our books and if I were to do this again, I would do the same simply because then you can add pages and toss pages. I am retired now and had no need for any of this....until now. Suddenly, I am volunteering a great deal and it is all so hard to keep straight on a simple calendar. Thanks for sharing....I will be shopping for a day planner to keep it all straight. ...

@catherinelevison33105 years ago Helpful for me because I’m just about to start. I’ve Journaled in a lot of different ways and I have learned to have the front be for 1 purpose and the back for another and allow them to meet in the middle. I want to just set up a little at a time so I’m not stuck in a system. So, first rule is do a pen check in the back before starting. Also, my book list page of “to be read” is going to be a simple list. No embellishments. When I start a new journal I’ll carry over anything I didn’t get to. I want to read my books whenever I feel like it and not because I want to strike through a line. ...
  • @
@myjoybox6 years ago Very honest and helpful video! Thanks! This will help me a lot on starting bullet journal!
  • @
@nimedhel094 years ago My biggest mistakes were taking too much time on setting up each month, wanting the bujo to be perfect and thinking I needed dailies for the long term.
The setting up problem was resolved with a few things: stickers (<3), using the page on the left of my month's title pages as a little reminder of the spreads I want to do for said month and the pens, mildliners and washi tape I'll be using.
My bullet journal also stopped looking so bad to me when I stopped trying so hard to make it look good and trying to emulate things that were done in the online community. I just started using my own method of organizing my pages.
Another common mistake I see online is people think they need to follow some set of rules in their bujos. They don't. A bullet journal is very personal, and your system is the same. You don't need to use all the spreads you see online. Use what you need.
For example, I don't use an index. Don't need it. I know which month is where with the washi tape I put on the side of the month's title page. And even without that I can find my way around my bujo quite easily. No need to number the pages or use pages for an index I know I'll never use, lol.
You also don't need to pretty up your bujo and take hours upon hours setting up the spreads. If you want to liven things up, stickers and washi tape are the way to go. You can even use stamps, if you want.

@MaidMirawyn6 years ago I started my collections at the back and worked forward, too. It just made sense to me.
I use refillable fountain pens in mine. I love using them, plus they are less wasteful. It's mainly the inks that determine show through. I primarily use Noodler's inks, Lexington Grey, Heart of Darkness, and one of the blue-blacks. ...

@GlitterPoolParty4 years ago I suggest starting on the first page to do your dailies, weekly, monthlies and then beginning on the last page of your journal and moving in, put your collections, trackers, and reference pages.
Re your ugly monthly regret.... just glue the pages together! Problem solved. Never look at it again! (Capture the data on a sticky note until you've figured out where that data will live....)
