See how to remove the gearcase on a Mercury outboard in this video from Boats.net. Removing the gearcase or lower unit on your outboard is an essential first step for a lower unit overhaul, replacing the lower or upper seals on your Mercury outboard, or replacing the water pump. John will show you how to remove the lower unit on our Mercury 25 Tracker, which starts by removing the cowling. Then, we’ll have to remove the starter. On this model, we’ll also need to release the shift shaft, and then we’ll unbolt the lower unit. See this diagram for a better look at the lower unit: https://www.boats.net/catalog/mercury/outboard-by-year/mercury-outboard/2001/25HP/1025312yn/gear-housing-driveshaft-2-25-1-gear-ratio?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=description_btf_BDN Read how to do this job step by step: https://www.boats.net/blog/mercury/tracker/25/lower/unit/removal?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=BDN-description-blog-link See how an outboard lower unit works here: /watch/oQCbiJPWT2AWb VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Removing the cowling - 0:25 Removing the starter - 0:40 Releasing the shift shaft - 1:20 Unbolting the lower unit - 2:00 Find Mercury outboard parts here: https://www.boats.net/catalog/mercury/outboard-by-hp?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=description_btf_BDN Talk to us: Twitter: https://twitter.com/boatsnet Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/boats.net/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/boatsnet/ In the video we’re working with a 2001 Mercury Tracker 25 EL outboard motor, but you may have similar steps for your Mercury outboard.
