Alarm over rampant 'sponsor' culture among female University students

1 in 5 female University students are reportedly engaged in relationships with older men or women in exchange for money, a lifestyle that is termed as the ‘sponsor culture’ according to study conducted by the Busara Centre for behavioural economics in 2020. The rising trend in the country is largely attributed to a mix of factors including unemployment, misplaced ambitions and the diminishing role of parents in their children’s lives. And as Maryanne Nyambura now reports HIV stakeholders on the continent have been concerned about the role of these sponsors in the spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
